India’s spacetech ecosystem is experiencing a historic transformation, driven by government-backed policy reforms that are opening up the entire space value chain to private players. These reforms are acting as a powerful catalyst, accelerating innovation, attracting significant investment, and strengthening India’s position in the global new space economy.

A Sector Transformed: By the Numbers

The impact of the reforms is clear from the rapid growth of the ecosystem. The number of active space startups has surged from just one in 2014 to over 400 in 2026, while cumulative private investment has crossed an impressive $618.5 million . This investment has expanded nearly six-fold in recent years, rising from $100.5 million in 2021-22 . As of 2026, 105 authorisations have been issued to non-government entities (NGEs), with 17 startups specifically authorised to undertake space activities .

The government estimates India’s space economy, currently worth about $8.4 billion, could grow five-fold to $40-45 billion by 2030 and potentially reach $100 billion by 2040 .

The Policy Framework Driving Growth

Central to this transformation is the Indian Space Policy 2023, which opened the entire space value chain to private participation . The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) was established as a single-window autonomous agency to authorise and promote space activities by private entities . As of June 2026, IN-SPACe has registered over 4,500 organisations, issued 133 authorisations, and signed 106 MoUs .

The reforms are further strengthened by a liberalised Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) policy, permitting up to 74% automatic FDI in satellite manufacturing and 49% in launch vehicles . The Department of Telecommunications has also simplified the satellite service authorisation process, consolidating it into a more streamlined framework .

Financial Fuel for Private Space Ventures

To support private space ventures, the government has created a robust financial ecosystem . The ₹1,000 crore Venture Capital (VC) Fund provides early-stage capital to promising space-tech startups . The ₹500 crore Technology Adoption Fund accelerates the deployment of indigenous space technologies , offering funding of up to 60% for startups and MSMEs . Additionally, the IN-SPACe Seed Fund Scheme offers grants of up to ₹1 crore for early-stage support .

These financial instruments have attracted a diverse investor base, now including sovereign wealth funds and global asset managers .

From Policy to Orbit: Tangible Outcomes

The success of these reforms is validated by Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-1, India’s first privately developed orbital rocket to successfully reach orbit, making it the first private company globally to succeed on its first launch attempt . The seven-storey rocket, built with an all-carbon composite structure and 3D-printed engines, has demonstrated India’s growing private-sector launch capabilities .

Indian private companies have so far placed more than 30 satellites into orbit and flown nearly 45 payloads, signalling growing technological depth .

The Road Ahead

The reforms also aim to position India as a global hub for small satellite manufacturing and launch services . Regulatory efforts are underway to develop a single-window interface and dedicated safety and security guidelines .

These space policy reforms are not just regulatory changes—they are a catalyst for India’s innovation economy, ensuring that spacetech joins AI, fintech, and deeptech as a pillar of long-term growth. With startups like Skyroot, Agnikul, and Pixxel leading the charge, India is no longer just a participant in the global space race—it is becoming a serious contender.
