Astrotalk Joins Unicorn Club at $1 Billion Valuation Through ESOP Buyback

Astrotalk, the Noida-based astrology and spiritual-tech platform, has officially become India’s 133rd unicorn, crossing the $1 billion valuation mark through an ESOP buyback that provided liquidity to over 100 employees. The milestone is particularly notable because the company funded the buyback entirely from its operational profits, rather than raising fresh capital from investors.

A Self-Funded Unicorn: The Numbers Behind the Milestone

Astrotalk’s valuation has jumped nearly 4x from its last funding round in June 2024, when it was valued at around ₹2,400 crore. The company’s financial performance justifies the leap:

MetricFY25FY24
Revenue from Operations₹1,176 crore₹643.4 crore (83% YoY growth)
Profit Before Tax₹285 crore
Net Profit₹250 crore (2.5x jump)₹100 crore
Current Revenue Run RateExceeded ₹2,500 crore

Founded in 2017 by Puneet Gupta and Anmol Jain, Astrotalk operates as a marketplace connecting consumers with astrologers for horoscope readings, birth chart analysis, tarot readings, numerology, and Vastu consultations. Over the years, it has expanded beyond services into adjacent spiritual and commerce categories, building a business model that blends tradition with digital scale.

The Significance: A Different Kind of Unicorn Story

Most Indian startups that reach unicorn status do so on the back of a primary funding round, diluting founders and burning investor cash to justify a headline number. Astrotalk has instead built genuine earnings and used them to reward the people who built the business. As co-founder and CEO Puneet Gupta noted: “The fact that we are able to undertake this ESOP buyback using the profits generated by the company makes this milestone especially rewarding”.

The company has raised relatively modest institutional capital to date—$20 million from Left Lane Capital in February 2024 and an additional $14 million in June 2024, with backing also from Elev8 Venture Partners. That a company with limited VC dilution has achieved a billion-dollar valuation underscores the profitability-driven approach that has become increasingly valued in India’s maturing startup ecosystem.

India’s Expanding Unicorn Landscape

Astrotalk is the eighth Indian startup to achieve unicorn status in 2026, joining Juspay, Neysa, KreditBee, Skyroot Aerospace, Square Yards, Sarvam AI, and Emergent. With this addition, India’s unicorn tally now stands at 133, cementing the country’s position as one of the world’s largest startup ecosystems.

What makes Astrotalk’s entry particularly striking is the sector it represents—spiritual-tech. India’s unicorns now span fintech, SaaS, e-commerce, healthtech, EVs, spacetech, and spiritual-tech, reflecting the remarkable diversification of the country’s innovation economy. The online astrology market is projected to grow from $102-106 million in FY24 to $930-1070 million by FY30, while the broader faith economy in India represents a $35 billion market opportunity ripe for technology disruption.

The Road Ahead

Astrotalk has stated it is now focused on strengthening its leadership in the spiritual-tech category, expanding its global footprint, and investing in technology and talent. The company has already served over 4 crore users to date. As co-founder Anmol Jain noted, the ESOP buyback is also intended to “strengthen the company’s ownership culture and encourage employees to participate in its next phase”.

In a startup ecosystem where profitability has become the new currency of confidence, Astrotalk’s journey shows that innovation can thrive in unexpected sectors when combined with digital scale, consumer demand, and disciplined execution.
