Not long ago, a laptop with a dedicated graphics card was essentially a gaming machine. It was heavy, flashy, and mostly appealing to a niche audience. Today, that’s changing. India’s coders, developers, and students are driving a surge in demand for GPU-powered laptops, turning what was once a gaming exclusive into an essential tool for a new, AI-first generation of tech talent.

Acer India’s Senior Director for Product Management, G.S. Sondhi, recently captured the shift in an interview, noting a clear change in how people buy computers . “Four years ago, there were essentially two separate segments: gaming laptops with GPUs and regular laptops without dedicated GPUs,” he said. “But nowadays, these segments are merging, and we are seeing more and more GPU-based laptops being used by programmers, developers, and students” .

The Engine Driving Demand

So, what’s behind this boom? The core driver is the rising need for AI computing power. Whether it’s training machine learning models, running large language models (LLMs) locally, or working with complex simulations, these tasks require the kind of parallel processing power that only a dedicated GPU can provide . Acer execs point out that a growing number of people are buying laptops because they make coding easier and allow them to run generative AI applications and AI agents right on their devices .

The scale of this shift is supported by the sheer size of India’s talent pool. With roughly 1.5 million engineering graduates each year, including over a million enrolled in computer science programs, the country represents a massive and growing market for performance-driven machines . In the first quarter of 2026, Acer capitalized on this trend to become India’s second-largest PC brand, with a 21.3% market share .

A Spectrum of Users

The demand for GPU laptops is broad and growing, encompassing several key groups :

  • Students: Tech students are increasingly seeking GPU machines for their research and projects.

A recent Digit survey of over 2,800 respondents found that a staggering 73% of Indian laptop buyers are willing to pay a premium for on-device AI capabilities . Nearly half (47%) of the users cited live translation as a key AI feature influencing their next purchase .

From Gaming to “All-Rounder”

This trend is blurring the lines between traditional laptop categories. Brands are responding by offering powerful, lightweight options that cater to coders and creators who don’t want the bulk of a traditional gaming laptop . This marks a clear shift away from basic productivity devices towards versatile machines capable of handling AI, data science, and high-end engineering tasks. It reflects how India’s next generation is gearing up for an AI-first future.

One factor that’s making these premium devices more accessible is a change in purchasing habits. Just as smartphones are bought on EMI plans, consumers are applying the same approach to expensive laptops, making a ₹1.5 lakh machine feel like a more manageable monthly expense . According to industry analysts, the India discrete GPU market, encompassing PCs and laptops, is expected to grow from $3.21 billion in 2025 to a staggering $9.33 billion by 2031 .
