Beyond Chip Design: India's Semiconductor Startups Diversify with $61.9M in H1 2026

India’s semiconductor startup ecosystem is undergoing a fundamental shift, expanding beyond its traditional focus on chip design into new frontiers like advanced packaging, equipment manufacturing, photonics, and AI-specific semiconductors. This diversification comes as the sector raised $61.9 million in the first half of 2026—equivalent to 81% of the total raised in all of 2025—bringing cumulative funding since 2022 to approximately $206 million across 51 rounds.

A Maturing Ecosystem, Fewer but Larger Bets

Investors are increasingly concentrating capital in startups that have progressed beyond the initial technology-building phase. The number of funding rounds has declined from 16 in 2024 to 13 in 2025 and just seven in H1 2026, even as capital deployment has remained robust. According to the Indian Semiconductor Startup Landscape 2026 report by Speciale Invest and Startup Policy Forum, this consolidation signals a shift toward companies with “stronger technology, clearer market opportunities and greater potential to scale”.

The pace of progression has accelerated significantly. Several startups have moved from seed to Series A within seven to 22 months, and seven recent Series A rounds totalling $73.7 million now account for roughly one-third of all semiconductor startup capital raised since 2022. This indicates that a growing number of companies are gaining access to larger pools of institutional capital as they approach commercialisation.

Government Support Fuels Private Investment

The link between government-backed semiconductor programmes and private venture funding is becoming increasingly visible. Of the 24 chip-design projects supported under the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) programme, 14 have subsequently raised institutional venture capital, collectively securing $100.8 million across their first and second funding rounds. Six of these companies have closed follow-on rounds worth a combined $53.6 million, with C2i Semiconductors, NetraSemi, Morphing Machines, and Mindgrove Technologies accounting for approximately 56% of private capital raised by DLI-backed companies.

Vishesh Rajaram, Managing Partner at Speciale Invest, noted that “government support is helping companies cross expensive early technical milestones, while private investors are following with larger first cheques and follow-on capital”.

From Chip Design to a Full-Stack Semiconductor Ecosystem

While chip design remains the backbone of India’s semiconductor startup sector, the ecosystem is rapidly expanding into new technological frontiers. The first wave of companies largely focused on digital, RF, RISC-V, and edge SoCs, but newer ventures are emerging in photonics, power and compound semiconductors, fab tooling and metrology, AI-focused chip technologies, and analogue AI inference.

Photonics Breakthrough

This diversification is already producing tangible results. Izmomicro, a Bengaluru-based silicon photonics packaging company, has developed a high-density packaging platform capable of supporting 32-channel fibre input and output with an insertion loss of less than 2 dB—a capability that only a handful of companies worldwide have demonstrated. The module also incorporates 32 DC I/Os, 4 RF I/Os, and high-speed RF performance up to 70 GHz, setting a new benchmark for integrating photonic and electronic systems.

Dinanath Soni, Executive Director of izmomicro, described the achievement as “a defining moment,” adding that the breakthrough “validates our years of R&D in precision packaging and positions us as a critical partner for the global silicon photonics industry”.

AI Semiconductors Gain Traction

The rise of artificial intelligence is creating new opportunities for Indian semiconductor startups. Bengaluru-based HrdWyr raised $13 million in a Series A round led by Ideaspring Capital to accelerate development of its AI-native system-on-chip products, targeting sectors such as consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and data centres. The company recently announced a strategic collaboration with boAt as part of its push into consumer technology.

Similarly, BigEndian Semiconductors secured $6 million to commercialise its first Vision AI system-on-chip, targeting CCTV, surveillance, and broader edge AI applications. The company has already completed the tape-out of its first chipset and is now entering the production and commercialisation phase. Co-founder Sunil Kumar noted that “just by being in India, it’s a $5 billion market for our domain,” suggesting significant domestic opportunity.

Strategic Investors and New Funding Models

Strategic investors are playing an increasingly important role in the semiconductor startup ecosystem. Companies including Zoho and TDK Ventures have anchored funding rounds, while global semiconductor companies are taking equity positions in Indian startups. According to the Speciale Invest report, strategic capital brings more than money—it provides access to fabs, tool credits, reference customers, and design partnerships.

The Road Ahead

The report identifies equipment and materials, design IP and EDA, and analog and RF as key areas with significant room for new companies. The India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 is expected to further expand opportunities across fab-adjacent tooling, compound semiconductors, advanced packaging, and RISC-V IP.

Arjun Rao, Co-founder and General Partner at Speciale Invest, captured the sector’s trajectory: “The next generation of investible semiconductor companies in India will not come from chip design alone. For India to produce its first $100 million-plus semiconductor product exits, these companies will need to combine deep technical IP with strong founding teams, early anchor customers and access to enough growth capital to stay the course through long product cycles”.

With cumulative funding of $206 million since 2022 and a clear trajectory toward diversification, India’s semiconductor startup ecosystem is progressing from design talent to building a resilient, full-stack semiconductor capability that could redefine the country’s position in the global supply chain.
