On July 18, 2026, India’s private space industry reached a defining milestone. The Vikram-1 rocket, developed by Hyderabad-based startup Skyroot Aerospace, successfully lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, making India only the third country in the world—after the United States and China—to achieve orbital launch capability through a private company . Dubbed “Mission Aagaman” (meaning “arrival”), the launch represents far more than a technological achievement; it signals India’s confident entry into the global commercial launch market .

From Suborbital Success to Orbital History

The mission built on Skyroot’s earlier Vikram-S flight in November 2022, which was India’s first privately developed rocket to reach space on a suborbital trajectory . The seven-storey-tall Vikram-1 rocket, standing approximately 22 metres high and built with an all-carbon composite structure, is designed to carry payloads of up to 350 kilograms into low-Earth orbit . Its propulsion system incorporates 3D-printed engines and high-thrust solid-fuel boosters, technologies flown for the first time in India .

The launch was not without drama. A “planned hold” due to apparent navigation issues forced a revised lift-off time from the scheduled 11:30 am to 12:05 pm, pushing the launch window back by 35 minutes . However, once the countdown resumed, the mission executed flawlessly. Within approximately 15 to 20 minutes, Vikram-1 injected its payloads into a 450-kilometre, 60-degree orbit .

A Mission Laden with Meaningful Payloads

Mission Aagaman carried an eclectic mix of payloads that reflected both commercial ambition and cultural pride. The primary payloads included technology demonstrators from multiple organisations :

Beyond the commercial and experimental payloads, the mission carried deeply symbolic artefacts. A handwritten postcard from Prime Minister Narendra Modi bearing the message “Vande Mataram” was successfully deployed into orbit . Also onboard was a miniature 18-karat gold rocket featuring micro-sculptures—each smaller than a grain of rice—of Vikram Sarabhai, Sir CV Raman, and APJ Abdul Kalam, honouring the visionaries who shaped India’s scientific and space journey .

“A Defining Moment in India’s Space Journey”

The response from India’s political and space leadership was swift and celebratory. Prime Minister Modi hailed the endeavour as “a defining moment in India’s space journey” and stated that “the growing participation of our private sector is opening new frontiers and accelerating innovation” . He later spoke directly with Skyroot’s co-founders, Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka, confirming that his postcard had successfully reached orbit .

Pawan Goenka, chairman of IN-SPACe (the government agency enabling private space players), noted that the mission exceeded all expectations: “The objective was to only lift off and clear the tower that is about 100 metres. But it went to 450 kilometres, released all the satellites, and all the objectives were met” . ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan was present at the Mission Control Centre alongside the Skyroot team .

A Vision Beyond the Launch

For Skyroot’s co-founders—former ISRO scientists who started the company in 2018, when the private space sector was still closed—the launch was deeply personal. “When there was no policy, no funding and no talent in the private sector,” they began building their vision . By May 2026, Skyroot had become India’s first space-tech unicorn, achieving a $1.1 billion valuation .

The company’s long-term ambition is to offer a “cab service to space”—a dedicated, on-demand launch service for small satellites, eliminating the long waits operators face when sharing space on larger rockets . With the capacity to build one rocket per month at its Hyderabad facility, Skyroot plans to conduct more test flights before commencing routine commercial launches next year .

India’s Growing Space Economy

The Vikram-1 launch comes amid intensifying global competition in the small satellite launch market, where startups are challenging established players like SpaceX .
