India Accelerates Sovereign AI Ambitions with Sarvam AI

India’s sovereign AI push is gaining significant momentum as Sarvam AI emerges as the country’s flagship homegrown artificial intelligence venture. The Bengaluru-based startup, which recently achieved unicorn status with a $1.5 billion valuation** after raising **$234 million in its Series B round, is at the forefront of India’s drive for indigenous AI infrastructure and large language models tailored to the nation’s unique linguistic and cultural diversity .

🇮🇳 Building a Sovereign AI Ecosystem

Sarvam AI’s rise is part of a broader national strategy to reduce reliance on foreign AI platforms and build domestic capabilities that serve India’s population. The company was selected as one of 12 organisations under the IndiaAI Mission to develop indigenous foundational models, receiving financial and compute support amounting to ₹246.72 crore . Under the IndiaAI Mission, selected companies were offered access to GPU compute at subsidised rates, with the government covering 40% of the cost .

Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary at MeitY, speaking at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, underscored the importance of sovereign AI, stating that “sovereignty in AI means having control over how AI systems are designed, deployed, and governed” . He emphasised that AI must be used to solve real challenges in healthcare, education, agriculture, and financial inclusion so that citizens can access services in their own languages.

🚀 Sarvam’s Technological Edge

Sarvam has built a full-stack sovereign AI platform, with everything developed, deployed, and governed entirely in India . The company’s models are tailored for Indian languages and real-world use cases, addressing a critical gap where global AI models struggle with Indian scripts and contexts.

Key Model Releases

At the India AI Impact Summit 2026, Sarvam launched new generation large language models, including 30-billion and 105-billion parameter models using a mixture-of-experts architecture, as well as text-to-speech, speech-to-text, and vision models . The 105-billion parameter model, named Indus, supports all 22 scheduled Indian languages and allows seamless switching between English and Indic languages like Hindi, Tamil, or Bengali .

Key Sarvam Models:

  • Bulbul (Text-to-Speech): Available in 11 Indian languages with 39 distinct speaker voices
  • Saaras (Speech-to-Text): Supports all 22 scheduled languages, 8kHz telephony audio, and code-mixed speech
  • Vision (Document Understanding): Tailored for 22+ Indian languages, mixed scripts, and handwritten text

🤝 Strategic Partnerships and Public Service Delivery

Sarvam’s institutional collaborations are transforming indigenous innovation into measurable public value across India. The company has partnered with:

  • UIDAI: Enhancing Aadhaar services using AI-driven voice interaction, real-time fraud detection, and multilingual support. A custom GenAI stack operates within UIDAI’s secure, on-premise infrastructure, supporting 10 Indian languages .
  • Government of Odisha: Establishing a 50MW AI-optimised Sovereign AI Capacity Hub to serve as a national compute backbone .
  • Government of Tamil Nadu and IIT Madras: Developing Digital Sangam, India’s first Sovereign AI Research Park, anchored by a 20MW AI data centre .

Google CEO Sundar Pichai, speaking at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, publicly praised Sarvam’s work, stating: “The work Sarvam has done developing local AI models… I just don’t see any impediments to that, and I think it is very, very well positioned” .

📊 Scaling at Population Scale

Sarvam’s technology is already operating at significant scale across critical sectors:

  • Conversational platform: Handles over 2 million interactions daily, doubling in two months
  • Inference platform: Processes 10 million API calls daily, tripling in three months
  • Vision model: Digitising over 35 million pages of insurance and land records
  • Speech models: Transcribing over half a million hours of audio each month
  • Voice agents: Reached 17 million farmers for the Ministry of Agriculture and supported policy renewals for 45 million policyholders of a leading insurer

As Sarvam co-founder Pratyush Kumar noted, “Country of India scale cannot rent intelligence. We have to build it ourselves. We are assembling the team, the compute, and the deployment engine to make this happen” .

💡 A Defining Moment for India’s AI Future

The timing of Sarvam’s rise is significant. The US government’s decision to restrict foreign access to Anthropic’s most advanced AI models served as a stark reminder that AI infrastructure controlled by other nations carries inherent policy risk . As Vivek Raghavan, Sarvam co-founder, stated: “We are in an era of sovereign AI… when you’re running a sovereign AI company, it’s important to get investment that is Indian” .

Bessemer Venture Partners partner Pankaj Mitra called Sarvam “one of the biggest bets that India will see over the next decade” . The company’s goal, as Raghavan articulated, is that “a significant portion of all tokens consumed in the country should come from Sarvam, and that Sarvam becomes a no-regret alternative to global models” .
