IIT Madras Opens Applications for MS in Entrepreneurship 2026: Your Gateway to Deep-Tech Startup Creation

For aspiring entrepreneurs, the path from a brilliant idea to a scalable startup is often littered with obstacles: lack of mentorship, limited access to capital, technical validation hurdles, and the absence of a structured environment to experiment and iterate. Most academic programs teach about entrepreneurship. Few actually teach how to become an entrepreneur.
IIT Madras is changing that equation.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has opened applications for its Master of Science (MS) in Entrepreneurship programme for the July 2026 session . Unlike conventional research degrees, this program is explicitly designed to help students translate research ideas into market-ready ventures . It is not about writing business plans—it is about building businesses.
Key Dates: The March 30 Deadline
Prospective applicants need to act fast. The last date to apply for the MS in Entrepreneurship programme is March 30, 2026 . The programme will begin in July 2026, and applications must be submitted through the official IIT Madras Research Admissions Portal .
Who Should Apply?
The MS in Entrepreneurship programme is designed for a diverse range of applicants :
- Graduates with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Science, Design, Management, or related fields
- Aspiring entrepreneurs who want to build their own ventures
- Early-stage founders looking to refine their ideas with institutional support
- Working professionals interested in transitioning into innovation and entrepreneurship
Applicants must demonstrate a strong interest in innovation or startup building. Candidates with research, entrepreneurial, or technical backgrounds are preferred .
Importantly, the programme is not limited to IIT graduates. While it welcomes students from premier institutions, it also actively encourages applications from across India. In fact, 61% of the startups currently incubated at IIT Madras come from outside the institute—a testament to the confidence the ecosystem inspires in founders nationwide .
The Programme Structure: Project-Based Learning
The MS in Entrepreneurship programme is conducted by the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SIE) at IIT Madras, which was formally launched in August 2025 . The School was established to create a world-class ecosystem for deep-tech startups and to put IIT Madras on the global map of entrepreneurial universities .
The programme is practice-led. Instead of spending two years in classrooms, students work on real project areas guided by faculty members at IIT Madras . Each selected candidate works with a faculty founder—a researcher who has already translated their work into commercial ventures—on a specific project area .
For the July 2026 intake, the programme offers 29 project areas spanning multiple sectors . These include:
| Sector | Focus Areas |
|---|---|
| Artificial Intelligence (AI) | Machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing |
| Robotics and Smart Systems | Autonomous systems, industrial automation, smart devices |
| Healthcare and Biomedical | Medical devices, diagnostics, digital health platforms |
| Energy and Climate | Clean energy, green hydrogen, climate-tech solutions |
| Advanced Manufacturing | Industry 4.0, additive manufacturing, smart factories |
| Deep Science | Quantum technologies, advanced materials, fundamental research |
| Mobility | Electric vehicles, autonomous transport, urban mobility |
| Sustainability | Circular economy, waste management, sustainable materials |
| Education Technology (EdTech) | Learning platforms, assessment tools, skill development |
The Ecosystem: What Students Gain
The MS programme is embedded within IIT Madras’ broader deep-tech ecosystem—India’s largest and most successful university-based startup hub . This ecosystem provides students with resources that few other programmes can match.
1. Incubation Support at Nirmaan
Students receive pre-incubation support at Nirmaan, IIT Madras’ pre-incubator that helps early-stage founders validate ideas, build minimum viable products (MVPs), and prepare for scaling . Nirmaan has supported successful startups such as GalaxEye Space .
2. Funding Opportunities through IITM Incubation Cell
The IIT Madras Incubation Cell (IITMIC) is the nodal agency for startup building and scale at the institute . Since its inception 12 years ago, IITMIC has incubated 511 deep-tech startups with a combined valuation exceeding ₹53,000 crore (US$6 billion) . These startups have generated over 11,000 direct jobs, filed more than 700 patents, and attracted ₹17,310 crore in venture capital investment .
Startups from IITMIC are building deep intellectual property in some of the hardest sectors—from orbital launch vehicles with reusable propulsion systems and organ-on-chip platforms to electric mobility (from e-scooters to flying taxis), underwater robotics, quantum security, semiconductors, and advanced AI products . The incubator has already produced two unicorns, one IPO, and several companies poised to cross the billion-dollar valuation threshold .
3. A Rs. 500 Crore Venture Fund in the Making
To address funding gaps at the seed and pre-Series A stages, the IIT Madras Research Park (IITMRP) is setting up a dedicated venture capital fund with a target corpus of ₹500 crore . The fund will provide catalytic capital to help deep-tech startups build products and attract commercial funding. The average ticket size will range between ₹4 crore and ₹5 crore . The first close is expected by March 2026, following SEBI approval .
4. The IITM Alumni Fund
IIT Madras has also launched the IITM Alumni Fund, which has already attracted significant interest from alumni with commitments for almost the entire target of ₹200 crore . This fund will deploy capital into IIT Madras-incubated startups, providing a direct way for alumni to invest in and grow with the next generation of ventures .
5. Intellectual Property Support
The School runs IP clinics to help students understand the process of IP filing and quickly convert their innovations into IP-backed products, with support from IITM’s IPM Cell .
A Track Record of Success
The MS in Entrepreneurship programme already has a growing community of scholars. Currently, 43 scholars are part of the programme, and more than five participants have already incorporated their startups . This is not a theoretical exercise—it is a startup factory.
The Bigger Picture: Universities as Startup Launchpads
IIT Madras’ MS in Entrepreneurship initiative reflects a broader trend in India’s higher education landscape: universities are increasingly becoming startup launchpads, bridging the gap between lab innovation and market readiness .
IIT Madras has been a pioneer in this shift. The institute’s innovation and entrepreneurship stack now spans the entire journey from idea to IPO :
- Evangelization: e-Cell and Tech-Soc introduce students to startup culture
- Ideation: Centre for Innovation (CFI), one of India’s largest student-run maker spaces
- Pre-Incubation: Nirmaan supports early validation and MVP development
- Incubation: IITMIC provides structured support, mentorship, and funding
- Scale: IITMRP and the new VC fund help startups scale globally
The numbers speak for themselves. In FY 2024-25, IITMIC achieved the historic milestone of incubating 100+ new deep-tech startups under its “Startup Shatam” mission . The incubator continues to screen more than 100 new startup applications every month .
The Vision: Viksit Bharat 2047
As Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, noted: “Viksit Bharat@2047 as envisaged by our Hon’ble Prime Minister will be a matured Startup Nation driving all Atmanirbhar critical technologies. Every journey has its first step, and I strongly believe that IIT Madras Incubation Cell has taken that firm progressive step” .
The MS in Entrepreneurship programme is part of that progressive step—a structured pathway for aspiring founders to transform research-driven ideas into globally competitive ventures.
