IIT Madras Hosts First-Ever Technology Summit in Delhi to Transform Research into Real-World Solutions

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras marked a significant milestone on May 5, 2026, by hosting its first-ever Technology Summit at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi . Under the theme “From IITM. For Bharat. Building Together.” , the summit aimed to build a collaborative framework for industry-academia-government partnerships to design, develop, and deploy technologies that will shape India’s journey towards a Viksit Bharat .
The summit brought together leaders from government, industry, and academia to co-create technology-led pathways for India’s development. It showcased research and innovation from IIT Madras through its 15 Centres of Excellence, research initiatives and interdisciplinary schools .
Minister Pradhan’s Vision: From Lab to Market
Inaugurating the summit, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan delivered a powerful message about the need to transform India’s innovation ecosystem.
“India’s innovation ecosystem is at a crucial turning point. Institutions like IIT Madras have been given mandates as responsible bodies to drive research through Centres of Excellence, reflecting the Government’s strong commitment to strengthening research infrastructure. However, priorities are now shifting. Research should not remain confined to academic theses but it must translate into real-world products and solutions.”
— Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of Education
The Minister highlighted a critical gap in India’s innovation landscape: much of the technology developed by Indian talent abroad is being purchased back by Indian industries from foreign markets. This indicates a need to build and invest in our own products domestically. With a strong internal market, India has the advantage of being both producer and consumer .
He further noted that the Government’s commitment was reflected in the proposed ₹1 lakh crore fund for R&D directed towards the private sector and startups .
Three Industry-Partnered Research Centres Launched
The summit marked the launch of three major industry-partnered centres, reflecting a strategic push to translate cutting-edge research into scalable, real-world solutions :
| Centre | Industry Partner | Focus Area |
|---|---|---|
| NTPC Centre for Cardiovascular Research | NTPC Limited | Address India’s cardiovascular disease burden through advanced research, indigenous device development, and clinical translation |
| BPCL Centre for Next-Gen Technologies for Robotic Assisted Surgeries | BPCL | Drive innovation in robotic-assisted surgeries, including joint, spine, and neuro procedures |
| HSBC Centre for Resource Efficiency, Recyclability & Circularity in Energy Transition | HSBC | Focus on sustainable energy transitions through technologies for resource efficiency, recyclability, and circularity |
The NTPC Centre will identify India-specific genetic risk factors and develop digital twin-based cardiac simulations, enabling non-invasive diagnostics and improved rural healthcare delivery. The YANTRAS centre by BPCL will support training, simulation, and validation of next-gen surgical technologies while enabling indigenous product development and startup incubation in medical robotics .
Bodhan AI: Building the Bharat EduAI Stack
In addition, IIT Madras announced “Bodhan AI,” a Centre of Excellence supported by the Ministry of Education. This initiative will build the Bharat EduAI Stack, a sovereign digital public infrastructure for education, with a national mission to train over one million teachers in AI-enabled teaching by 2027 .
IIT Madras’ Research and Innovation Engine
IIT Madras has emerged as a leader in fostering industry–academia collaboration through its strong research ecosystem. Under the Government of India’s ‘Institute of Eminence’ (IoE) scheme, the institute has:
- Established 15 Centres of Excellence
- Mobilised over ₹950 crore in research funding
- Resulted in more than 240 patents and the creation of over 40 deep-tech startups in the past seven years
Voices from the Summit
Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, called for collective action: “Today, IIT Madras is at the forefront of research through our IoE CoEs. We reiterate our commitment to rally partnerships and fast-track our journey towards a Viksit Bharat by 2047.”
Prof. Ashwin Mahalingam, Dean (Alumni and Corporate Relations) , noted: “Real impact happens when R&D reaches the last mile. This collaborative ecosystem makes us leaders in this space.”
The event also saw the release of the book, “Inventing a Better Tomorrow: 25 Years of IIT Madras Impact,” documenting the institute’s contributions to research, innovation, and nation-building .
Looking Ahead: Bharat Innovates 2026
The summit also served as a precursor to Bharat Innovates 2026, a national programme of the Ministry of Education. The maiden edition will take India’s top 120 DeepTech startups to France to catalyse pilots, co-development, investments, research partnerships, manufacturing and market access . The programme was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 17, 2026, at the inauguration of the India-France Year of Innovation.
The Final Word
The IIT Madras Technology Summit 2026 was a call to action for industry, corporate firms, and academia to come together to build Bharat’s future . By bridging the gap between cutting-edge research and real-world deployment, IIT Madras is paving the way for a new generation of deep-tech startups and positioning India as a global leader in innovation.
